Check the weather-stripping around your doors and windows for leaks each year and\u2014even with the most energy-efficient windows\u2014it&#8217;s a good idea to open your curtains when the sun shines and close them when it gets dark.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Change your light bulbs.<\/strong> As you may have heard, incandescent light bulbs will soon be <a title=\"Learn more on the Washington Post website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/where-we-live\/wp\/2013\/11\/19\/house-watch-say-goodbye-to-the-incandescent-bulb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phased out<\/a> in the US. Why not make the switch to CFL or LED now, so you can start enjoying the energy savings? Choosing a greener light source is particularly sensible in dark winter months, when we spend more time indoors anyway.<\/p>\n<p><em>How much can it affect your energy bill?<\/em> Each ENERGY STAR\u00ae certified bulb uses 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb, saving you approximately $40 to $135 in energy costs over its lifetime (<a title=\"Visit the ENERGY STAR website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/ia\/products\/images\/ES_Lighting_LifetimeSavings_8-12-13-2.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see source<\/a>). If you&#8217;re having trouble deciding whether you want CFL or LED lights, the ENERGY STAR website has some useful tools to help. Use the <a title=\"Use the tool on energystar.gov\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/productfinder\/product\/certified-light-bulbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Product Finder<\/a> to shop and compare specific CFL and LED bulb brands by type and feature.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Don&#8217;t heat your home when you&#8217;re not there (or awake) to enjoy it.<\/strong> You may have heard that it takes more energy to reheat your home after letting it cool down than it would to maintain a constant temperature. Not true! Unless you have a heat pump, steam heat or radiant floor heating, turning the <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/energysaver\/articles\/thermostats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thermostat<\/a> down at night and while you&#8217;re out during the day could lower your energy costs 20 to 75%.<\/p>\n<p><em>How low should you go? <\/em>Ultimately, it&#8217;s a matter of balancing cost savings and personal comfort. Check your furnace manufacturer&#8217;s recommendations, but a <a title=\"View the article on the Chicago Tribune website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/classified\/realestate\/chi-heat-thermostat_chomes_0102jan02,0,63476.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good rule of thumb<\/a> is to set your thermostat to 68 degrees while you\u2019re at home and 55 degrees at night.\u00a0Even 55 degrees may be too low in extreme weather or with poor insulation. <a title=\"Learn more on energy.gov\" href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/energysaver\/articles\/turn-down-temp-dont-let-your-pipes-freeze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>What you&#8217;ll need:<\/em> A programmable thermostat is a must.
