Dream home 2012: What homebuyers want

Signs of housing market improvement have caused a lot of buzz about what homebuyers are looking for in their dream home. Here are a few of our favorites from February:

MSN Real Estate’s “How to choose the right house for the right reasons” lists homebuyers”must-have” home features, as voted in a reader poll. Winners: conveniences like a laundry room close to the bedrooms, spacious closets, abundant natural light, efficient HVAC, generous kitchen storage, and open-concept living spaces—especially those where the kitchen and family room are combined. Better Homes and Gardens’ recent consumer survey shows that buyers are focused on getting the most value for their money and their space. Consumers seem more willing to put their money into style upgrades like countertops, flooring and fixtures, rather than square footage. Multi-purpose rooms and energy efficiency were also priorities. Real estate directory Trulia conducted a Love & Housing survey of its users, examining male and female attitudes regarding homeownership and also ranking the desirability of many popular home features. There was a surprising similarity in responses from men and women, both agreeing that a master bath, walk-in closet and gourmet kitchen topped their dream home wish list.
