Searching Denver Area Schools: Are Denver Public Schools Your Best Option?

January 16, 2012

Whether you’re relocating to the Mile High City or are just shopping for a new home in the area, be sure to do the research on Denver school districts. Even a few miles can make a difference in the quality of education offered.

Though there are several schools with stellar ratings within the Denver Public School District, the reputation of Cherry Creek schools and Douglas County schools are drawing more families to the south suburban area. Even homebuyers without children are considering purchasing homes in these districts, as school performance could impact the resale value of their homes down the road.

Cherry Creek School District (CCSD)

One of the most respected school districts in the Denver area is Cherry Creek School District, based in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The district serves students in several cities, including parts of south Aurora, Centennial, Greenwood Village and Englewood. Many of the schools in this district rank 10 out of 10 on GreatSchools.org, a website that rates schools according to test results in reading, writing, math and science.

Douglas County School District (DCSD)

Douglas County schools are another popular option for parents south of Denver. From Highlands Ranch to Parker and Castle Rock, this district is also known for great test scores among its students as reported on GreatSchools.org. In addition, this district is home to a number of highly rated charter schools, some of which offer classes from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Beyond test scores, it’s important to make sure the school you choose is equipped to handle the individual needs of your child. Extracurricular activities, level of parent involvement and classroom size all factor in to whether a particular school is a good fit.
