Best Places to Live: Loudoun County, VA

Beneath the sunlit vineyards and antebellum charm of Northern Virginia’s Loudoun County beats the heart of a thriving tech industry. Named one of Money Magazine‘s 25 places “Where the Jobs Are” and Forbes‘ “10 Best Places to Get Ahead,” this area has experienced 75.3% job growth in the last decade and boasts one of the highest median household incomes in the U.S.

It’s no wonder. Loudoun County and its neighbor, Fairfax County, are home to the Dulles Technology Corridor, a 25-mile stretch along Virginia State Route 267 that has one of the nation’s highest concentrations of technology firms. This “Silicon Valley of the East” includes offices for Oracle, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, IBM and Microsoft. Its access to one of the largest internet exchange points in the world has attracted telecommunications employers such as AOL, Verizon Business, AT&T and Sprint, while proximity to DC and the Pentagon has made it an ideal location for government contractors like Raytheon and Orbital Sciences Corporation. Dulles International Airport is also a magnet for United Airlines, Amazon and other transportation, retail and logistics giants.

No area is recession proof, but with jobs at an all-time high (see PDF), a November 2011 unemployment rate of 3.9% versus the U.S. average of 8.6%, and incomes on the rise, Loudoun County’s outlook is bright.
