Cultivating our culture

Helping homebuyers achieve the American Dream is a noble calling. As much as we take pride in building and financing homes where individuals and families can thrive, we also take great pride in providing a place where our own employees can grow and achieve their dreams.

A place to grow

Long-term career satisfaction depends on the ability to gain skills and take on new responsibilities. That’s what growth is all about. The MDC family of companies is committed to hiring from within when possible and helping employees take their current roles to the next level.

Employee spotlight: David Viger

David Viger (Dave) calls himself a “homegrown product” of Chairman Larry Mizel and CEO David Mandarich. That’s because he started his homebuilding career as a Richmond American Homes superintendent. He has been on a solid trajectory within the industry ever since. Today, we’re pleased to call him the Chief Operating Officer for Richmond American Homes Corporation.

This transition didn’t happen overnight. As a graduate from the Naval Academy and former NFL player, Dave knew that finding a company that shared his values of discipline and hard work would be key to his ongoing success.

“The company is very disciplined. We understand who we are and what we do well. We’re focused and don’t get distracted,” Dave says.

Now that he’s on the other side of the desk, Dave looks to hire employees that share the same values that contributed to his own growth path. A candidate can check all the boxes, but if a shared mindset isn’t there, the employee may not be the best fit.

Dave considers two key factors when curating a strong workforce. “Effort and attitude are what I look for when hiring employees and leaders,” he says.

Community impact

Successful businesses look beyond profits to consider how they can give back to the community. It is rewarding to work for a company that cares about the world and seeks out ways to have a positive impact, both in our own backyard and across the globe.

Volunteering & company match

We love giving employees opportunities to make a difference. Many take work days to volunteer as individuals or corporate teams at food banks, senior centers and other community organizations. And with our charitable match program, employee donations to organizations in need are matched dollar for dollar, up to $100 per employee per calendar year.

Foundation

A history of company giving culminated in the establishment of the MDC/Richmond American Homes Foundation in 1999. Since that time, millions of dollars have been donated to enhance health care, promote diversity and help those in need. Visit the Foundation website for more information.

Sustainability

As we entered the 2020s, MDC renewed its focus on environmental initiatives that create energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. From responsible land development to national solar options, we’re committed to building homes for today and tomorrow. Find our annual Corporate Sustainability (ESG) Report on our investor relations page.
